First stop 29 km from Te Anau, this point offers a lovely view of the Murchison Mountains. This is mainly where the boat departs to Glade Wharf, starting point of the legendary Milford Track.

The direct drive takes a minimum of 2h30 without stops from Te Anau. However, we strongly recommend allowing 4-5 hours to enjoy the numerous scenic stops and points of interest. The road is so beautiful that it would be a shame to drive it without stopping!
No, there are no petrol stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound. It is absolutely essential to fill up in Te Anau before departing. Make sure you have a full tank, especially if you plan detours or if your vehicle consumes a lot of fuel.
Yes, the Milford Road can be open all year round. However, it may be closed during winter (June-September) due to avalanche risks, particularly near Homer Tunnel. Always check weather conditions and road status on the NZTA website before departing, especially in winter and spring.
