The Milford Road (SH94) is much more than just a road leading to Milford Sound. This legendary 120 km route crosses Fiordland National Park and offers scenery so extraordinary that you could easily spend an entire day exploring it.
From glacial valleys to alpine tunnels, mirror-like lakes, and spectacular waterfalls, every kilometre reveals new natural wonders that make this journey an adventure in itself.


Te Anau, a small town of 1,900 inhabitants located on the shores of beautiful Lake Te Anau, is the ideal starting point for your adventure to Milford Sound. With up to 4,000 beds available during summer season, it offers a wide choice of accommodation for all budgets.
It's also the starting point for 3 of New Zealand's 10 Great Walks and the ideal place for various lake activities: cruises, kayaking, fishing, or helicopter flights.

First stop 29 km from Te Anau, this point offers a lovely view of the Murchison Mountains. This is mainly where the boat departs to Glade Wharf, starting point of the legendary Milford Track.
The most famous stop! A short path (5 minutes) leads to a platform where the Earl Mountains are reflected in clear weather. Don't miss the photo of the "Mirror Lake" sign installed upside down, readable right-side-up thanks to the reflection!

For 1 or 2 km, this valley is simply magnificent with numerous possible stops. At dawn, the morning mist gives the landscape a mystical quality that will delight photographers.


Starting point for several hikes including the famous Routeburn Track. Perfect for a break and the departure of beautiful walks like Key Summit (3h return).
Excellent spot to observe Keas, the world's only mountain parrots! Beware, they are curious and don't hesitate to rummage through your belongings. You can also refresh yourself with the clear, potable water from the stream.

Mandatory passage 100 km from Te Anau! This one-way tunnel may require a wait of up to 20 minutes. Take advantage of this time to admire the Fiordland landscape and perhaps spot some Keas, these mountain parrots unique to the world.
