It depends on the trail you choose! The Chasm and Lookout Track are accessible to all. Key Summit requires basic fitness. Lake Marian requires good physical condition. The Milford Track requires excellent fitness and experience. Gertrude Saddle is reserved for very experienced hikers with climbing equipment.
The hiking season runs from October to April. Summer (December-February) offers the best conditions but more crowds. Autumn (March-April) is ideal with fewer crowds and magnificent colors. Spring (October-November) can be unpredictable. Winter is not recommended except for very short trails like The Chasm.
Essential equipment: waterproof hiking boots, waterproof clothing (jacket and pants), multiple layers, hat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, water, food, first aid kit, map and compass/GPS. For the Milford Track: sleeping bag, sleeping mat, stove. Always check the weather before departing.
The independent Milford Track is limited to 40 people per day and must be booked in advance on the DOC (Department of Conservation) website. Bookings open in July for the following season and fill up quickly. Alternative: guided Milford Track with accommodation in comfortable lodges, no limit on numbers but more expensive.
Inform someone of your itinerary and return time. Check the weather and trail conditions. Carry a distress beacon (PLB) for long hikes. Beware of sandflies: repellent is essential. Weather can change quickly. When in doubt, turn back. Rescue can be difficult and expensive.
Not mandatory for most short trails which are well marked. Recommended for the Milford Track if you don't have multi-day hiking experience. Mandatory for Gertrude Saddle unless you're an experienced alpinist. Guides provide safety, local knowledge, and logistics management.
Car recommended for flexibility. Milford Road (SH94) leads to all trail starts. The Divide, Key Summit and Routeburn Track: km 85. The Chasm: km 155. Milford Sound Terminal: end of road. Warning: road closed in winter due to avalanches. Free parking but limited in high season.
Independent Milford Track: 3 DOC huts with bunks (Clinton, Mintaro, Dumpling). Booking mandatory with the track. Guided Milford Track: private lodges with full comfort. Camping forbidden on the Milford Track. For other long trails: DOC huts available but check availability and required bookings.
