Discover Doubtful Sound, the largest and wildest of New Zealand's fjords. A unique experience in the heart of Fiordland, accessible only by boat and bus from Manapouri.
Doubtful Sound, called "Patea" in Maori, is the second largest fjord in Fiordland National Park. Three times larger than Milford Sound and ten times longer, this spectacular fjord offers a wilder and more intimate experience of New Zealand nature.
Unlike Milford Sound, which is accessible by road, Doubtful Sound can only be reached by a combination of boat and bus transport from Manapouri, thus preserving its pristine and wild character. This limited accessibility ensures a less crowded and more authentic experience.
The fjord extends 40 kilometers in length and plunges to depths of over 420 meters. Its calm waters perfectly reflect the mountain peaks that surround it, creating landscapes of striking beauty. Marine wildlife is abundant: dolphins, seals, penguins and sometimes even whales can be observed during cruises.
Experience the ultimate adventure in New Zealand's wildest fjord. Unique combination of boat on Lake Manapouri, Southern Alps crossing by bus, then 3-hour cruise in the pristine waters of Doubtful Sound.

All excursions to Doubtful Sound start from the charming small town of Manapouri, located on the shores of the lake of the same name.
Manapouri is a small community of about 250 inhabitants, nestled on the shores of the magnificent Lake Manapouri. This peaceful town is often described as one of the most beautiful in New Zealand, with its crystal-clear waters surrounded by majestic mountains.
Lake Manapouri itself is exceptionally beautiful, dotted with 34 islands and fed by the pure waters of the Southern Alps. It's from Manapouri port that all adventures to Doubtful Sound begin, making this small town the gateway to one of the world's most spectacular fjords.
Manapouri is only 20 minutes by car from Te Anau, making it easy to combine visits to both destinations during your stay in Fiordland.

Possum Lodge is rustic accommodation by Lake Manapouri, ideal for a stay in Manapouri.
