Doubtful SoundThe wild fjord

Discover Doubtful Sound, the largest and wildest of New Zealand's fjords. A unique experience in the heart of Fiordland, accessible only by boat and bus from Manapouri.

New Zealand's wildest fjord

Doubtful Sound, called "Patea" in Maori, is the second largest fjord in Fiordland National Park. Three times larger than Milford Sound and ten times longer, this spectacular fjord offers a wilder and more intimate experience of New Zealand nature.

Unlike Milford Sound, which is accessible by road, Doubtful Sound can only be reached by a combination of boat and bus transport from Manapouri, thus preserving its pristine and wild character. This limited accessibility ensures a less crowded and more authentic experience.

The fjord extends 40 kilometers in length and plunges to depths of over 420 meters. Its calm waters perfectly reflect the mountain peaks that surround it, creating landscapes of striking beauty. Marine wildlife is abundant: dolphins, seals, penguins and sometimes even whales can be observed during cruises.

2 - Wilmot Pass Crossing

Duration: 45 minutes

The journey offers exceptional panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and lush Fiordland vegetation. Along the way, your guide will explain the geological history of the region and the construction challenges of this unique road.

3 - Fjord cruise

Distance: Up to 40 km into the fjord

The highlight of your day: an unforgettable cruise in Doubtful Sound. The modern catamaran takes you to explore this majestic fjord, sailing to the Tasman Ocean when weather permits.

Admire the spectacular waterfalls cascading down the rock faces (particularly impressive after rain), the vertiginous cliffs rising over 1000 meters, and the abundant marine wildlife: bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, and sometimes Fiordland penguins.
